Description:
The Archaeology Technician assists professional archaeologists and cultural resource
specialists in identifying, documenting, and protecting archaeological and historical sites on
public lands. This position supports compliance with federal cultural resource laws and helps
ensure that heritage sites are preserved for future generations. Work includes field surveys, site
recording, artifact documentation, and data entry.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct archaeological field surveys to locate and document cultural resource sites.
- Record site information using standardized forms, GPS units, and mapping tools.
- Assist with excavation, artifact collection, and laboratory processing under supervision.
- Prepare site maps, sketches, and basic condition assessments.
- Support cultural resource compliance efforts under the National Historic Preservation Act(NHPA).
- Maintain and organize field and lab equipment, records, and collections.
- Enter site data and photographs into agency databases and GIS systems.
- Collaborate with archaeologists, historians, and land managers on field projects.
- Follow all safety and cultural sensitivity protocols while working on heritage sites.
Qualifications:
- Must be age 18+
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest or coursework in archaeology, anthropology, history, or cultural resource management.
- Familiarity with archaeological field methods and basic mapping techniques preferred.
- Comfort working outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions.
- Detail-oriented with strong observational and recording skills.
- Ability to use GPS and basic GIS software for field mapping.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Physical ability to hike long distances, carry gear, and conduct manual field tasks.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in archaeology, anthropology, or history preferred.
Schedule: Mon-Thurs, 7:00am-5:30pm
